Heather Hinz: Scores Amazing Last Second Goal!
Player Spotlight Series

[Posted 6/23/2015]

Heather Hinz (2001-U14)

Heather Hinz has participated in the Maryland State ODP for multiple seasons and is currently a member of the 2001 (U14) girls training pool. Heather recently scored an amazing goal while playing her last game for the Maryland United Football Club in the final seconds of the game to keep the team from losing.

Heather is a goal keeper and was pulled forward for the corner kick which was sure to be the final play of the game. At this point, Maryland United was losing 1-0. Heather made a near post run, raised up, made contact with the ball and directed it into the back of the net with authority! Heathers goal was captured on video and has been placed on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50XMEnUf2Zk&feature=youtu.be

Goal keeping runs in the family as Heathers older sister, and former Maryland State ODP player, Megan Hinz is now playing for the University of Michigan Womens Soccer team. Megan started 17 games for the Wolverines in 2014 and amassed an 11-3-3 record.

Heather participated with the Maryland State ODP as field player for the 2014 season but has been transitioning from a field player to goal keeper over the past 12 months. Heathers transformation has been credited to Maryland State ODP Coach Michael Elfman. Coach Elfman traveled with the U13 girls on the 2014 Maryland State ODP International Trip to England. This is where Coach Elfman challenged Heather to pursue playing in the net. Heather accepted the challenge and has truly excelled in this position.

Heather stated, Ending my season with a header goal felt so amazing.  Now that I play primarily in goal, I don't get a lot of chances to score.  I forgot how good it feels to put the ball in the back of the net. It almost feels as good as keeping it out of the net. Additionally, Laura, her mother, added, "Maryland ODP has provided Heather an opportunity to explore multiple positions, and focus on developing her as a well-rounded soccer player.  Watching Heather score as a goalkeeper was absolutely trilling and made me realize the value of focusing your training beyond your specific position."

Everyone from the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association congratulates Heather on this fantastic goal and looks forward to watching her continue to grow and develop as a person and as a player in the coming years!

Players desiring to represent their state, while receiving high-level training and the opportunity to earn a spot on the Regional or National pool for their age group and gender, should register to tryout for the 2016 Maryland State ODP this fall. Information pertaining to online tryout registration will be available on the MSYSA website beginning early September.

What is ODP?

The US Youth Soccer ODP is a national identification and development program for high-level players.  The program identifies  and develops youth players throughout the country to represent their state and regional associations.  At the state association level, pools of players are identified in each eligible age group, and brought together as a team to develop their skill through training and competition.  From the state pools and subsequent teams, players are identified for regional and national pools and teams.  Maryland State ODP teams are comprised of the best Maryland players in various age groups.
