Maryland State ODP Overperforms at 2014 Region I ODP ID Camps
During the first two weeks of July, the Maryland State ODP sent hundreds of local elite soccer players from the U13-U17 boys and girls state training pools to the 2014 Region I ODP ID Camps. The U13-15 boys’ ID Camps were held at Rider University in New Jersey and the U16-17 boys’ ID Camps were held at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. Additionally, the U13-17 girls’ ID Camps were held at the University of Rhode Island in Rhode Island.
The Maryland State ODP is run by the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) and the MSYSA is one of fifteen state associations that collectively comprise Region I. As a result, while at regional events, it is expected that the MSYSA should, on average, maintain a 6.6% representation (1 divided by 15 state associations). However, as every state association is slightly different, a more appropriate measure to determine a realistic representation percentage (i.e. benchmark) would be the overall size of the state association measured by registered players.
Based on the total number of registered players for the MSYSA (57,714 as of February 28, 2014) in comparison with the total number of registered players within Region I (1,018,399 as of February 28, 2014) the MSYSA should expect a 5.7% representation at any Region I level event.
For the 2014 Region I ODP ID Camps, the Maryland State ODP placed 55 players into the various Region I pools. In total, this represents 17.5% of all Maryland State ODP training pool participants. Additionally, as it has been reported that a total of 496 players were selected to Region I pools this season, the Maryland State ODP currently maintains an 11.1% representation. This is nearly twice (1.93) the expected representation percentage for the MSYSA based on the number of registered players and shows that the Maryland State ODP is overperforming based on these measures. Similar results were also recorded for the 2013 season. Please see the below table:

The Maryland State ODP U17 Girls earned their spot in the semi-finals after a 0-1 loss to New Jersey, a 4-0 win over Massachusetts and a 4-0 win over Eastern New York. At the end of group play three teams were tied with 6 points (Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey). According to the tournament rules, because of the three-way tie, goal differential was used as the tie breaker. The Maryland State ODP U17 Girls will play Virginia in the semi-finals on Saturday, June 21.

Congratulations to the 1998 Boys on winning the 2013 Region I Tournament!
Congratulations to the 1998 Boys Maryland State ODP team on winning the 2013 Region I Tournament for their age group and gender.
Coaches Brian Wall and Steve Shurman led the 1998 Boys to an undefeated season in both the 2013 VA Friendlies and the 2013 Region I Tournament. The 1998 Boys won the 2013 Region I tournament with a record of 5-0. This result was the product of an overall team effort. The 1998 Boys team effort produced a dominant performance outscoring their opponents 20-2. During their run, the offense had 5 players with multiple goals showing a balanced attack. There was not a weakness at any position. The midfield possession was impressive to say the least. The defense was amazing allowing only 2 goals during the 2013 Region I Tournament.
Additionally the 1997 Boys advanced to the finals where they lost to EPYSA.
Congratulations again from everyone at the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association and best of luck as you each work to earn a position on the 2013 Region I Pool this July.
