Players are selected on the basis of open tryouts. Players must attend tryouts in order to be selected. The Maryland State ODP tryouts use ODP coaches and other approved evaluators to assess the players in attendance. Every assessor (the majority being professional Maryland State ODP coaches) is tasked with making an assessment of each player that they are assessing before assigning a value of that personal assessment in the form of a 1, 2 or 3 or any variation thereof (1.5, 2.3 etc.). Their subjective assessment is based on the four pillars of a soccer player (technical, tactical, physical and psychological). All of the assessments, translated into a numerical value for comparability, from all of the professional coach assessors for all of the players, are entered into a spreadsheet. All of the scores are totaled, averaged and then rank ordered. The resulting depth chart provides the foundation for the final pool selections.
The head coach for each training pool has the option to select up to 10% (rounded up to the next whole number) of the training pool from the players that registered and attended tryouts. Every one of the available spots that the head coach does not choose to use will be filled by selecting the next player in line according to the depth chart.
It is the sole responsibility of all players to make an impression on assessors during the tryout process in order to be selected as a member of the Maryland State Olympic Development Program.
Based on the number of tryout participants, most age groups will have a callback tryout. In most cases, the callback selections will be announced after the second tryout. The tryout numbers along with tryout t-shirt color and player last name for all players called back will be posted on the MSYSA website at least 24 hours prior to the callback tryout. Callback tryouts will be indicated on the tryout schedule. Check the website before this tryout to see if you were selected for the callback.
Final selections will be posted on the MSYSA website shortly after the final tryout. All player selections are final.
