MSYSA Director of Coaching Position Available

The Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) is accepting applications for a Full Time Director of Coaching.  Interested candidates should submit their resume and five references to Marie Langford, MSYSA Executive Director (executivedirector@msysa.org).  Review of qualified applicants will begin immediately and remain open until December 22, 2013.

Job Responsibilities

 

Primary Responsibilities:

Coaching Development and Education

  • Develop, review, administer and implement state coaching courses to meet the needs of programs within MSYSA consistent with the philosophies and intent of U.S. Soccer and US Youth Soccer
  • Develop added material (teaching and training aids) for instructors and candidates attending MSYSA coaching courses
  • Recruit, select, assign, observe, develop, train, evaluate and mentor qualified staff instructors for coaching education courses with recruitment coming from USSF and US Youth licensed coaches
  • Adhere to the National criteria for the successful completion of all courses offered by MSYSA
  • Promote attendance, advertise, and coordinate all state level coaching courses as the chief coordinator and licensing agent of the state level coaching program as per guidelines from USSF and US Youth Soccer.  Meet with clubs and leagues and use electronic and social media to help promote these courses
  • At a minimum of every two years, promote and arrange at least one USSF “C” course and one USSF “Y” course
  • Conduct, as the lead  instructor, at least 2 “E” courses and 2 “D” courses in a seasonal year
  • Serve as backup instructor for coaching courses if assigned instructor is unavailable
  • Maintain a list of staff instructors and their qualifications, records of courses and clinics and database of all licensed coaches in the state of Maryland
  • Work with the MSYSA office staff to manage and maintain a calendar of events and prepare licenses for distribution to qualifying coaches upon completion
  • Develop and manage budget
  • Attend and participate in Regional and National meetings

Player Development/Olympic Development Program

  • Recruit, select, assign, observe, develop, train, evaluate and mentor  ODP coaching staff
  • Establish and implement coaching philosophy and methodology according to age level assignments
  • Conduct staff meetings for ODP coaches and managers in coordination with the MSYSA  Programs Director
  • Attend training events
  • Attend ODP tournaments
  • Attend ODP camps
  • Enhance and promote the MSYSA ODP within the state, regionally and nationally
  • Develop/enhance and promote a recreational program within the state
  • Promote and advertise meetings with clubs/leagues to enhance ODP and recreational development
  • Develop and manage budget
  • Attend Regional and National meetings
  • Oversee and attend international trips with ODP teams

Management & General Duties

  • Responsible for recruiting, conducting interviews and practical evaluation, training and recommending the hiring of all potential Development Coaches and Instructional Staff to the MSYSA Board for approval, when applicable
  • Manage the day-to-day work and assignments for the Instructional Staff.  Regularly evaluate effectiveness and responsiveness of all Development Coaches and Instructional Staff.  Communicate expectations and provide development opportunities.  Ensure that the MSYSA programs are delivered to affiliated organizations on a consistent basis and in a professional manner
  • Review and assess all coaches as to their USSF licenses, coaching ability, knowledge of the game and desire to participate in the development of players in the state of Maryland and conduct annual performance appraisals of Development Coaches and Instructional Staff using established performance standards.  Develop specific recommendations for professional development and monitor implementation.  Provide copies of performance appraisals to Executive Director
  • Submit to the MSYSA President and Executive Director the qualifications of ODP coaches and Instructional Staff
  • Act as a soccer ambassador representing the state association to not only the soccer community but to civic groups, clubs, sponsor (and potential sponsor), schools and other designated audiences
  • Attend and participate at MSYSA board meetings and the MSYSA AGM when requested  and work with the Executive Director and/or Executive Board in developing coaching seminars/workshops/for the state staff coaches and instructors, MSYSA registered coaches and other interested parties
  • Attend and participate at MSYSA sponsored events, to include but not limited, to State/Presidents Cup, when required
  • Prepare monthly report
  • Work under the direction of the MSYSA President and Executive Director

Requirements of Candidate:

  • Must be a current USSF “A” licensed coach
  • Must possess a USSF National Youth License
  • Must have experience as a coaching  education course instructor
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have extensive coaching experience at the youth, high school, college or professional levels.  Exposure to coaching at the recreational, travel and premier levels preferred
  • Must be knowledgeable of state/national/international soccer cultures and the issues facing youth soccer
  • Must be able to work effectively within a diverse volunteer organization
  • Must be computer competent  (e.g. Word, Excel , Power point, Publisher, Outlook)
  • Must be able to work independently in an efficient and professional manner
  • Must be a team player
  • Must be willing to travel
  • Must be willing to work weekend coaching education courses/clinics
  • Must be willing to attend and work ODP events whether they occur on weeknights or weekends
  • Must be available to serve as the first backup coach for all ODP teams, including those teams going on international trips
  • Must demonstrate high moral and character values
  • Teaching background is preferred, but not required
