Maryland State ODP
Improvements for the 2016 Season
The Maryland State Olympic Development Program is always looking to improve in an effort to continue providing the best program possible for the high-level soccer players in the state of Maryland.
The improvements being made each year are the direct result of feedback from coaches, players, parents/guardians and other stakeholders. These improvements have contributed to the record-breaking tryout registration numbers for each of the past two seasons and are some of the reasons why players and coaches are enjoying their experience and are excited to return in 2016!
The improvements for the 2016 Maryland State ODP season are as follows:
Improvement #1: Select team managers for the U12 boys and girls
Additional Information: One U12 team manager per gender will be secured, educated along with the full program team managers (U13-17) and provided with the same ability to contact parents/guardians (e.g. One Call Now) beginning with the 2016 season. The U12 team managers will help to communicate with parents/guardians of players participating in the Maryland State ODP U12 and will be an additional set of eyes and ears at the field.
Improvement #2: Increase the total number of U12 training sessions from 6 to 9
Additional Information: The Maryland State ODP U12 is primarily focused on developing players, as such the total number of training sessions will be increased by 50% so that the U12 boys and girls receive 9 training sessions beginning with the 2016 season. The rain date will be maintained as it is currently offered so that in the event a training session is missed due to inclement weather the training session can attempt to be made up.
Improvement #3: Increase the U12 program fee by $100, from $400 to $500
Additional Information: As the number of training sessions has increased, the cost of the program will also increase to cover the increased cost of training facilities and coaches’ remuneration etc. The $100 increase brings the total program cost to $500.
Improvement #4: Increase the U16/17 Girls program from 6 to 9 training sessions
Additional Information: Offering three additional training sessions will provide the coaches with more time to learn the players and to prepare them for the Region I ODP Tournament. Additionally, the players will now have more opportunity to receive high-level coaching while forming relationships with the other quality players from across the state.
Improvement #5: Increase the U16/17 Girls program fee by $100, from $750 to $850
Additional Information: As the number of training sessions has increased, the cost of the program will also increase to cover the increased cost of training facilities and coaches’ remuneration etc. The $100 increase brings the total program cost to $850.
Improvement #6: Increase the Maryland State ODP coaches base pay by $150 per coach
Improvement #7: Offer make-up tryouts for the U12 portion of the Maryland State ODP
Additional Information: Every age group within the Maryland State ODP, except for the U12’s, offered a make-up tryout to players who registered for tryouts and were unable to attend due to injury or illness for the 2015 season. Beginning with the 2016 season, the U12’s will have a make-up tryout block and this will further help to ensure that every player is given every opportunity possible to tryout for and earn their spot on the Maryland State ODP.
Improvement #8: Hold Callback tryouts for the U13/14 training pools
Additional Information: The U15, U16 and U17 training pools held callback tryouts as part of the tryout process for the 2015 season. Beginning with the 2016 season, the U13 and U14 training pools will also have a callback tryout block. This will provide the professional coach assessors with the opportunity to view all of the top players on the same field in direct comparison with the other top players. This will help to continue ensuring that the absolute best players are ultimately being selected.
Improvement #9: Institute a “Coach's Pick” element to the current tryout process
Additional Information: Providing the head coach of each training pool with the option to invite up to a set number of players (based on a consistent %) to be included in the training pool will further help to ensure that no players are missed and will create an additional level of “buy-in” from the coaches.
Beginning with the 2016 season, the head coach for each training pool will have the option to select up to 10% (rounded up to the next whole number) of the training pool from the players that registered and attended tryouts. Every one of the available spots that the head coach does not choose to use will be filled by selecting the next player in line according to the depth chart.
Improvement #10: Optional indoor training for first sessions in February and March
Additional Information: For the past two or three seasons the first training session for the U13-17 Boys and the U13-15 Girls has been cancelled due to the remnants of an inclement weather event. While it is not desirable to hold training sessions indoors, it is important for the players to get together as a training pool at least one time before attending the VA Friendlies (late February) and it is better to train indoors as opposed to not at all. Beginning with the 2016 season, the Maryland State ODP will contract with indoor facilities to create the option to hold the first few sessions indoors in the event of remnants from inclement weather events.
Improvement #11: Implement a “Rain Date” make-up session for U13-17
Online tryout registration for the 2016 Maryland State ODP will begin in early September. See you all at tryouts!
